Increasing Engine Performance With Dyno Tuning

When you spend hard-earned money on a car it is good to keep its performance as high as the day you bought it. Crucial to doing so is keeping the engine tuned. Engine tuning is the adjustment or modification of an internal combustion engines so that it yields optimal performance. Engine tuning increases an engine's power output, economy, and durability. There are many kinds of engine tuning, but dyno tuning is the kind most closely associated with engine performance.

Dyno tuning Ohio, like dyno tuning in most other places, is for car owners who are interested in increasing the power output of their engine. The aim of dyno tuning is to increase the rate of combustion in a given engine. This is achieved by putting more air/fuel mixture into the engine, increasing its compression ratio and getting rid of waste products more rapidly. More specific ways of increasing power include increasing engine displacement and using larger or multiple carburetors to get the engine to operate more smoothly. Further means of increasing engine performance include changing the profiles of the cams on the camshaft by increasing the valve opening height, optimizing the valve timing to improve burning efficiency, and raising the compression ratio by reducing the size of the combustion chamber. This last operation makes more efficient use of the cylinder pressure developed and leads to more rapid burning of fuel.

In order to increase engine performance it is important to reduce losses to friction. This can be achieved by machining moving parts to lower tolerances than those accepted by producers; it can also be achieved by replacing parts. Reducing the rotating mass, which comprises the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, and flywheel, can also increase performance; the lower rotational inertia that results from this action improves throttle response.

A final means of increasing engine performance is to lower the under bonnet temperature, which has the effect of lowering the engine intake temperature. This is often done by installing a form of thermal insulationa heat shield, thermal barrier coating, or other type of exhaust heat managementon or around the exhaust manifold. This ensures that more heat is diverted out and away from the under bonnet area.

Dyno tuning can be applied to a wide variety of vehicles. The choice of maintenance and modification depends on one's budget, the degree of performance enhancement desired, and the characteristics of the engine to be modified. On some occasions, tuners use analytical tools to help evaluate and predict the effect of modification or adjustments on the performance of a vehicle.

Whatever the aims of a car owner, as regards his or her car, it is important to work with tuners who have in-depth knowledge of the car make and model. It is also important that car owners understand the benefits and trade-offs of certain modifications. Intake, exhaust, and chip upgrades can be rather inexpensive, but they can make reasonably general improvements to engine performance. However, installing a different camshaft, for example, trades smoothness at low engine speeds for improvements at high engine speeds.
